A daily trip around Sofia to the Seven Altars monastery
Чети на български
If you haven't already noticed, then you should know that there are numerous examples of small and big Bulgarian monasteries. Let me take you to the next one described in this blog - The Seven Altars. Situated only 80km away from Sofia, the road to it passes the picturesque Iskar gorge. The tiny road to it surprised me and I arrived at a renovated and well-maintained monastery. The backyard was a little heaven with small statues here and there. A huge redwood was also part of the scenery.
Quiet and peaceful, it dates back since the reign of Petar Delyan between the years 1040 - 1041. Its name comes from a legend telling about seven boyars that settled in the area. This is said to be the only monastery with 7 altars in the entire country. It was a home of revolutionists, as well as it served as a school for a while.
As you can see, the monastery looks quite preserved and it feels like time has stopped here.
If you happen to be in this part of Bulgaria, one of the day trips around Sofia you can organise is a hike to the Vazov's eco path and a visit to the other very beautiful Cherepish monastery.
