Belogradchik Rocks
Belogradchik is a small city located in north-west Bulgaria, next to the Serbian border. The place is famous for its unique nature and especially for the Belogradchik rocks that are proclaimed as a Natural Landmark.
The rocks have interesting shapes and they look like different creatures. The one above is the "The Madonna". A legend says that in the past there used to be a monastery and a nunnery. There was an extremely beautiful young nun living there. She fell in love with Anton, a young shepherd. Their love was impossible, but soon she gave a birth to a child. As a result the nun was cursed and banished. Her lover, Anton wanted to save her on his horse, but that day a thunderstorm transformed her into a rock. The Shepherd stayed there to wait her forever.
The rocks are surrounded by a fortress, called "Kaleto'. It dates back from I - III century and it is one of the most preserved fortresses in Bulgaria, as well as a cultural monument of national importance.
Have you ever heard of the Belogradchik rocks? Are you interested in visiting such natural phenomena? Have a nice weekend everyone!

ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've heard of the Belogradchik rocks and how they all so uniquely formed gives them such a presence and personality. I enjoyed the story about the rock called The Madonna as it gives you something to think about. It's a shame that the weather was a little gloomy but it doesn't take anything away from the spectacular sights. Thanks for sharing this with us Stanislava! Happy weekend to you!
