Climbing peak Ruen is something I haven't heard many people have done. Whether because it's not a popular destination, or because it isn't that high as Musala or Malyovitsa, I really wonder why I have never been in Osogovo mountain and why have I neglected this part of Bulgaria. Anyway, the destination was chosen and we stayed a night at Osogovo hut (on the photo above). On the next morning, we headed to the peak.
We knew it was a long destination, but we didn't believe that it would be 18km one way! On the way to the peak, the landscape was fascinating. We could see Rila and Pirin mountains in the distance. The pleasant part was that there was almost no incline.
It is said that it takes 3h and 40min to climb it. After an hour of walking, we stopped for a rest. We continued and we reached a hill, where we thought the peak was. We climbed it, and once we were on top, we could see that there were 3 more hills to climb in order to reach the peak.
After 3h of walking, we finally could see that we were approaching the peak.
Peak Ruen is situated on the border between Bulgaria and Republic of Macedonia. It is 2251m high - the highest in Osogovo mountain. On the way to it, we were not only impressed by the beautiful surrounding nature, but we also saw wild horses.
