Guest Post - 5 Best Apps for European Travelers

I would like to thank Sany for publishing this article. As a budding photographer, her site showcases all of the beautiful places she’s traveled, as well as giving great
lifestyle and travel tips and tricks. After reading this, I highly recommend you check out her post on the best sandwich spots in Sofia, Bulgaria.

European travel has long been popular for backpackers, city breaks and summer vacations. The vast array of diverse and unique locations that the continent offers makes it a historical, cultural and geographical gold mine. However, with so many great spots to visit and so much to do in all four corners, it can be hard to navigate your European adventure and get the most out of all this fabulous collection of countries have to offer. Luckily, these five apps are fantastic resources and cover all you could possibly need to enjoy your trip to Europe, wherever you’re planning on visiting.

Visit Europе

The VisitEurope app is your one-stop shop for everything you need to know about any of the numerous destinations you can chose to visit. It covers all the must-sees, hidden gems and exciting events that take place all over the continent and contains over 1,000 high quality pictures to help you make your choice. You can highlight favorites and save them on to a master itinerary, and you can even connect with Facebook to view attractions that friends and family have visited. You can also complete your itinerary with real time flight price updates, hotel booking options, rail tickets and car hire—all at the push of a button.

Rail Planner

Interrailing Europe has become extremely common, particularly for young travelers. Because of this, Rail Europe has released a RailPlanner app to help customers plan their routes. However, you don’t have to have an interrail ticket to find this app useful. With a detailed and easy-to-use search feature, you can plan trips all across Europe, and the app with assist you in finding the best route. It shows directions, duration of journeys, time of arrival and even if you need a reservation to access the train. The only thing missing is prices, so if you don’t hold an interrail pass, you might have to some extra research.

Spotted By Locals

For those looking to get off the beaten track, SpottedBy Locals is a fantastic way to get good, honest recommendations from people who intimately know the place they’re writing about. Locals are handpicked to create comprehensive guides to all the hidden treasures in their city. It can be used offline—so you don’t have to worry about roaming charges—and is regularly updated to inform you about seasonal and one-off events. Alongside this, it covers most major European cities and is available on a number of platforms, so it’s the perfect accompaniment to any trip to the continent.

WiFi Finder

It’s no secret that internet access has become a massive part of all travels. Whether it’s to book the next leg of your trip, keep in touch with loved ones back home or upload pictures and blog posts, the chances you’re going to need WiFi is extremely likely. The WiFiFinder app is a great way to pinpoint free and open networks while on the go. You can even filter your search by provider type, so if you’re looking for a cup of coffee and to catch up on work emails, you can search specifically for coffee shops. It works offline and for both phones and tablets, so it’s an extremely handy tool when navigating the many wonderful European cities.

LiquidVPN

Unfortunately, traveler-targeted cybercrime is on the rise. While pickpockets and other scammers have long profited from unsuspecting tourists, since the advent of the internet, thieves are now going online to rob us blind. Because people on vacation are forced to use public WiFi—which are extremely unsecure networks—travelers’ details are extremely vulnerable. It’s easy for malicious hackers to intercept passwords or credit card details in order to access your bank account or commit fraud in your name. Using the LiquidVPN app avoids this as it creates a secure connection and encrypts all your data, meaning you can browse confidently no matter where in Europe you are!

Everyone should travel Europe once in their lives, and these apps go a long way to help make that dream a reality. You can plan routes, pick landmarks and even protect yourself, all from your mobile phone. However, these are just a few of the endless great European travel apps available. If you know of any more that deserve to be on this list, then be sure to leave a comment below.

  15. Great post. I haven't gone back to Europe in so many years now but I can imagine theft still being an issue. I love the wifi app locator, though recently through a Lufthansa membership I learned of a data pack sim thingy that can be used all through Europe, I was thinking of using that next time I returned, but I may reconsider now
