The picturesque Iskar gorge and its touristic places

The Iskar gorge is located in the north-western part of Bulgaria and is a canyon formed by thousands of years of erosion. It is 75km long and offers pretty interesting and unusual sights. One of them is Ritlite (on the photo below) - a natural landmark situated on the left bank of the Iskar river. Ritlite is a rock formation, that is over 120 million years old.

Along the way is situated the Cherepish Monastery The Assumption of Virgin Mary. It dates back to the 14th century. Just like the Rozhen Monastery, it was ruined and set on fire during the Ottoman domination. It's one of the more picturesque monasteries I've ever been to, I like the wood carvings and that it is situated right next to Iskar river.

The Seven Altars monastery is also situated in this part of Bulgaria, which makes it a perfect destination for a daily trip near Sofia.

  3. Wow, I had never seen any rock formations such as these before, they surely are stunning. Is the monastery still running or is it a tourist place now?

  14. Iskar Gorge is one of the most unique and beautiful places you've featured. I appreciate the natural formation of certain places, it's what happens over time and shows that there's such beauty in the history of areas like this.
